TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Â- The No. 33 Auburn men's tennis team picked up its third straight league victory on Friday night, downing No. 45 Alabama 4-2 at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Senior Daniel Cochrane provided the clinching win at No. 1 singles over Alabama's 21st-ranked Daniil Proskura 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to seal the match for Auburn (14-5, 4-1 SEC). Cochrane has now won seven straight matches in single, picking up his first win of the season against a top-25 opponent.
"Dan Cochrane came up big in the end and he put the match in our favor with a resilient effort," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. Dan got broken at 5-3 leading the match in the third and then broke right back to win it. I'm happy for all the guys. We lost the doubles point, but the Alabama played better than we did. Then in singles we won five first sets and getting the win from Joseph Van Dooren at No. 4 was with four of the matches going to three sets was huge."
The win by Auburn marked its third straight win in Tuscaloosa over the Crimson Tide dating back to 2010. The Tigers also avenged an early loss in non-conference play to the Tide; Alabama knocked off Auburn, 4-1, at the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery back on Feb. 23.
Alabama (9-8, 2-3 SEC) jumped out early to a 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert took care of business on court three, knocking off Alabama's Hayes Brewer and Sean Donohue, 8-3, to move to 11-3 in dual matches.
The Crimson Tide picked up the final two matches to take the point. Andrew Goodwin and Stuart Kenyon won 8-3 against the Tigers' Dante Saleh and Petar Tomic on court three, while Auburn's Cochrane and Oliver Plaskett fell on court one to No. 62 Becker O'Shaughnessey and Proskura, 8-4.
Van Dooren was the first player off the court in singles, providing a spark for Auburn with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court four to even the match at 1-1. Alabama went back in front at 2-1 for a short time with Goodwin's 6-3, 6-3 win over the Tigers' Petar Tomic.
With four matches still on court, all in three sets, Saleh earned a hard-fought win on court five, taking down Alabama's Brewer 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to tie the match once again. The freshman is now 10-3 in dual matches for the Tigers this season and picked up his second win of the year against an SEC foe.
Ollert earned his third win against a ranked opponent this season on court two, upsetting Alabama's O'Shaughnessey in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, to set up Cochrane's match-clinching victory at No. 1.
The Tigers continue on the road next weekend, traveling to Gainesville to take on Florida next Friday and wrap up the road swing at South Carolina on Sunday, March 23.
