AUBURN, Ala. Â- The No. 29 Auburn men's tennis team fell at home on Sunday afternoon to No. 9 Georgia, dropping its final match of the regular season, 4-0, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Tigers finished the regular season with a 14-12 overall record and a 4-8 mark in SEC play. Georgia moved to 16-6 overall and 11-1 SEC to claim the SEC regular season title and the No. 1 seed for the SEC Tournament.
Auburn will be the ninth seed in next week's SEC Tournament, which runs Wednesday-Sunday in Nashville, Tenn. The Tigers will open play against the host and eighth-seeded Vanderbilt, Thursday at 3 p.m. in a second-round match at the Brownlee O. Curry Jr. Tennis Center.
"I thought we gave ourselves a chance in the doubles, but we fell behind in singles and they are good a team," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "We couldn't have played any worse than we did during the beginning of singles. I thought we settled down and competed, but at that point it was too late against a team like that. "
In doubles, Auburn fell behind early after Georgia claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. On court two, Nathan Pasha and Garrett Brasseaux defeated Auburn's Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert, 8-5. Georgia's 12th-ranked tandem of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland downed the Auburn's 60th-ranked duo of Daniel Cochrane and Oliver Plaskett, 8-5, to secure the point.
Auburn's No. 3 team of Dante Saleh and Joseph Van Dooren were close to clinching their match, but were leading 7-5 when play was suspended.
Georgia's top of the lineup provided the Bulldogs with a pair of wins to jump out to a 3-0 advantage in singles. No. 71 Ollert battled with early in the first set, but fell 6-4, 6-1 to No. 18 Austin Smith at the top spot. No. 61 Cochrane, playing in his final home match, was defeated by the Bulldogs' Nathan Pasha 6-2, 6-3 on court two.
Auburn's Saleh fell 6-2, 6-2 on court five to provide the Bulldogs' Georgia's Nick Wood the clinching win. Van Dooren was in a third-set in his match on court five, against No. 76 Ben Wagland when play was halted.
