NASHVILLE, Tenn. Â- The Auburn men's tennis team fell to No. 23 Vanderbilt, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon, eliminating the Tigers from the 2014 SEC Tournament at the Currey Tennis Center.
No. 9 seed Auburn (14-13) now awaits its postseason destination following its eighth straight loss. The Tigers fell to 0-2 all-time against Vanderbilt at the SEC Tournament.
"I thought that Vanderbilt was ready at the start of doubles and we got off to a slow start, we dug ourselves too big of a hole there," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "In certain spots, we're not competing well enough, not getting it done. We'll get down 2-0 too quick and it's too big a fight back. Disappointing effort today."
Eighth-seeded Vanderbilt (15-9) claimed the doubles point on its home court to open the match behind wins from the top of the lineup. Vanderbilt's Rhys Johnson and Pen Binet defeated the Tigers'
Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert, 8-6 on court one in the first match to finish. Auburn's 61st-ranked pair of Daniel Cochrane and Oliver Plaskett fell 8-4 to the nation's fifth-ranked duo Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman, 8-4, giving the Commodores the point.
Playing on its home court, Vandy made it 2-0 with a win on court six by Suresh Eswaren 6-0, 6-2 over Auburn's Petar Tomic. The Commodores pushed their lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory by Johnson on court five, topping the Tigers' Dante Saleh.
No. 64 Cochrane fell in straight sets 7-6, (6), 5-2 at the No. 2 line to 24th-ranked Gonzales Austin. The senior forced a first-set tiebreaker, but could not recover in the second set allowing the Commodores to clinch the match.
Joseph Van Dooren was leading 6-3, 6-5 when play and in position to win his match when play was called. Ollert had won the first set against No. 59 Lipman at the top of the lineup 7-5, and was in the second set when play was abandoned. Lengsfeld dropped the first set, but was on his way back leading 4-3 on court three.
