Auburn, Ala. --Former Auburn All-Americans Ruthie Bolton and Bill Cody are among eight individuals who are part of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 that will be inducted Saturday at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel.
A four-year letter winner from 1986-89, Bolton scored 1,176 points at Auburn and ranks fifth all-time in assists with 526. The Lucedale, Miss., native played in a record 132 games and holds the record for games started in a season (35) and steals in a game (10). She helped lead the Tigers to three SEC Championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and two consecutive runner-up finishes in the tournament.
The first Auburn player inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, Bolton had a 15-year professional basketball career including being a part of 10 U.S. National Teams.
A two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in 1996 and 2000, she started every game in the 1996 Olympics and averaged 12.8 points per game. In the gold medal game against Russia, it was her back to back 3-pointers in the final few minutes of the game that propelled the U.S. to victory.
After the 1996 Olympics, she went to play for the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA. She was a WNBA All-Star, scoring over 2,000 points in her career and is fourth on the WNBA's all-time 3-pointer list. She was the first player for the Monarchs to have her number retired and was the first WNBA Player of the Week in July of 1997. She was the 1991 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year.
She played in Europe from 1989-95 for teams in Sweden, Hungary, Italy and Turkey.
Cody was a three-year letter winner at linebacker from 1963-65 for the Tigers. The Greenwood, Miss., native was named All-American in 1965 and was a three-time All-SEC selection. He was the UPI Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC in 1965 and was an Academic All-American. He played in the 1963 Orange Bowl and the 1965 Liberty Bowl. Cody was named to the Birmingham Post-Herald Auburn Team of the `60s and was selected to play in the 1966 Senior Bowl.
He had a six-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions (1966), New Orleans Saints (1967-70) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1972). He served as a Team Captain for the Saints and the Eagles.
