AUBURN, Ala. - Sophomore RHP Cole Lipscomb made his first career start and earned his first career win on Wednesday as Auburn baseball defeated Alabama State 7-5 at Plainsman Park.
The Prattville, Ala. native pitched 6.0 innings and struck out six with one walk. He allowed four runs on eight hits in just his fourth career appearance. He has struck out 14 batters in 10 innings this season.
The Hornets (1-3) started early with three runs in the first as they rapped five two-out hits including run scoring knocks by Hunter Allen (two RBI) and PJ Harris (one RBI).
It wasn't until the fourth inning that Auburn would get on the board with two runs, and it came in a big way as sophomore Daniel Robert and freshman Hunter Tackett hit back-to-back home runs for the Tigers. It was the first time Auburn had gone back-to-back since Cullen Wacker and Garrett Cooper against Texas A&M on April 6, 2013.
Auburn (3-2) tied the game at three in the fifth inning on a sacrifice pop up into shallow center field by Bo Decker - his sixth RBI of the season.
The Tigers erupted for four runs in the sixth after Alabama State had moved on top 4-3 on a RBI single by Yamil Pagan. Auburn's Damon Haecker drove home Blake Logan and Anfernee Grier on an RBI double, then Jordan Ebert followed up with his second home run of the year over the monster in left field for the 7-4 lead.
Alabama State added a run in the eighth on a solo home run by Harris off reliever Robby Clements.
Justin Camp shut the door on the Hornets in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
Tyler Bender (1.1 IP, 4 ER, 1 K) took the loss for Alabama State. Hornets' starter Tyler Howe pitched into the fourth inning but allowed two earned on four hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.
Cody Nulph had two hits for Auburn as seven different players recorded hits. Haecker and Ebert both led the way with two RBI.
Auburn's three home runs on the night marked the first time the Tigers had accomplished that feat since Dan Glevenyak (twice) and Damek Tomscha went deep in May 2013 against Jacksonville State.
Auburn is in action next on Friday when it hosts Radford to open a three-game weekend series. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
