AUBURN, Ala. - The 38th-ranked Auburn men's tennis team won its third doubleheader of the season, defeating UAB 6-1 and 4-1 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Friday.
"The morning match was a whole lot closer than the score. I think we did a very good job in singles, competing like we need to," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "Even though we lost the point, I thought the doubles was okay in the afternoon. We competed and played with energy. We stepped it up and played a solid match; we are going need to continue to do that."
Marko Krickovic and Oliver Plaskett earned the Tigers' first doubles win of the day, defeating UAB's Mitchell Martell and Luiz Felipe Pinto 6-2. Maxime Hinnisdaels and Dante Saleh then won their match by the same score over Stepan Vancurik and Christopher Egan Morriss. Lukas Ollert and Joseph Van Dooren finished the morning with a close 7-6 (7-4) win over Donovan McSeveney and Christian Coetzee.
In the morning singles, Ollert cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 over Martell. Krickovic also won comfortably, defeating Pinto 6-3, 6-3. Hinnisdaels lost the first set in his singles match, but won the next two sets to top McSeveney 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Oliver Plaskett faced a similar situation, but took down Stepan Vancurik 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). Van Dooren defeated Coetzee 6-4, 6-7 (0-1), 10-7 in a third set match tiebreaker.
Auburn took the first doubles match of the afternoon as Ollert and Van Dooren defeated Paiste and Morriss 6-3. The second two matches were close, but UAB won both to take the doubles point. Martell and Pinto defeated Krickovic and Plaskett 6-4 and McSeveney and Coetzee took down Hinnisdaels and Saleh 7-6 (7-3).
The Tigers clinched the match after crusing through singles. Krickovic won 6-2, 6-1 over Coetzee, while Saleh took down Vancurik 6-0, 6-3. Van Dooren also added a solid performance, defeating Oliver Poysti 6-2, 6-3. Ollert then clinched the match, topping McSeveney 7-5, 6-3.
The Tigers, now 7-1, host Clemson next Friday at 2 p.m. UAB is now 1-3.
