COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Auburn used strong singles play to defeat Arkansas 4-2 in first-round action at the SEC championship tournament at Texas A&M Wednesday.
The Auburn doubles lineup looked a bit different, but the tandem of Lukas Ollert and Oliver Plaskett was a 6-3 victor over Arkansas' Jovan Parlic and Giammarco Micolani at the second spot. At No. 1 singles, Max Hinnisdaels and Marko Krickovic forced a tiebreaker, but Arkansas won the doubles point with a 7-6 (8-6) victory.
Once singles play began, Hinnisdaels was a quick winner at No. 3, defeating Johan den Toom 6-1, 6-3 to tie the match at 1-1. At No. 1 singles, Lukas Ollert added a 7-6, 6-3 victory over the higher-ranked Micolani.
Three Tigers pushed their matches into a third set: Krickovic, Dante Saleh and Oliver Plaskett. Krickovic was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 winner over the Razorbacks' Santiago Munoz at the No. 2 singles spot, and then Plaskett overcame a first-set loss to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 over David Herrerias, clinching the match for the sixth time this season.
Auburn, now 15-12 on the season, faces fifth-seed Vanderbilt (18-6, No. 22 nationally) Thursday at 11 a.m. CT. SEC tournament action continues through Sunday.
