AUBURN, Ala. - No. 3 Auburn remains unbeaten at home after cruising to a 21-0 (5) victory over Indiana State Sunday afternoon. The win caps a 4-0 weekend record as host of the Tiger Invitational.
Auburn (15-1) lined up as the visiting team at Jane B. Moore Field and put the game away by scoring nine runs before the Sycamores (3-5) had their first chance to bat. After the third, the Tigers had produced all 21 of their runs and totaled 19 hits among 13 different batters. Auburn matched a season high with five home runs in the five-inning affair.
"We swung much better today," head coach Clint Myers said after the game. "It was our best day of swinging. We showed some power, barreled a lot of balls. We're going to practice tomorrow, play UAB on Tuesday, take Wednesday off and come right back with Murray State on Thursday."
A total of 15 Tigers scored or had a hit with 13 contributing an RBI. Myers unleashed the nearly the entire roster playing 24 total student-athletes in the win.
Homers by Kasey Cooper and Emily Carosone dealt the bulk of the damage in the first inning off their two and three-run swings. The next inning followed suit with home runs by Jenna Abbott and Jade Rhodes to highlight a five-run frame.
Courtney Shea joined the home run parade by leading off the seven-run third inning with a solo shot.
Auburn used three pitchers to toss the shutout with Marcy Harper picking up the win to move to 5-1 on the year. Myers was happy with the pitching performance following the game.
"This is the lowest ERA we've had since we've been Auburn," said Myers. We have a staff ERA of 1.00 and when you have that, things are pretty good. Corey (Myers) is doing a masterful job of selecting the innings and the teams. Everyone is healthy and everyone is strong right now."
Makayla Martin and Rachel Walters combined to close down the door for the Tigers who went on to notch the team's the seventh shutout of the year.
No. 3 Auburn was the highest ranked opponent Indiana State has faced in program history.
