AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 3/2 Tigers capped off Pink Weekend at Jane B. Moore Field sweeping the series against Longwood with a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon. With this win, the Tigers advance to 37-4 on the season with 12 straight wins.
The Tigers donated the proceeds from Pink Weekend to Joy to Life foundation and presented the Montgomery based organization with a check of $3,601 after the game.
"Good teams find ways to win," head coach Clint Myers said after the series." We played a good ball club. They beat people pretty bad. They're a scrappy ball club. I'm happy that we got the wins and also really happy we could take part in the fight against breast cancer with our donation."
"We are so much better than what we are playing and we are 37-4. So when we start firing on all cylinders, we get the pitches we have been getting, playing great defense and our bats come alive - we are going to be a force to reckon with."
Senior right hand pitcher Marcy Harper started in the circle for the Tigers throwing the first 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and four walks. Senior Lexi Davis picked up the win (5-0) throwing the next 3.1 innings before turning the ball over to Rachel Walters who threw for her second save of the season.
Longwood (21-15) took an initial 2-0 lead driving home their first run after an RBI double from Carly Adams and a single from Glenn Walters in the third inning.
Auburn answered their next turn at bat with a two spot of their own tying the game at 2-2. A base hit, and two walks loaded the bases and with two outs, Madi Gipson and Courtney Shea drew two more walks scoring Kasey Cooper and Carlee Wallace.
The Tigers added on in the fourth with an RBI single from Emily Carosone. Carosone went 1-for-1 in the game reaching base all four times with two walks and accepted her 74th career hit by pitch and 14th of the year.
Longwood added a single run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings with two solo home runs by Adams and Karleigh Donovan bookending their comeback efforts but a three-run scoring spree by Auburn in the fifth proved to the difference.
Jade Rhodes led off that frame with a walk followed by singles from Madi Gipson and pinch hitter Courtney Shea's RBI base hit. Jenna Abbott lobbed a deep fly ball to left for a sacrifice hit and Kendall Veach's RBI put the Tigers ahead for good.
Auburn improved to 15-0 when scoring six runs or more in a game this season and is now 28-1 in non-conference games with three remaining on the schedule.
