AUBURN, Ala. -- No. 3/2 Auburn softball earned a 5-2 win over Longwood Saturday evening in the second game of Pink Weekend at Jane B. Moore Field. Auburn picks up their fourth-straight weekend series win and improves to 36-4 on the season while the Lancers fall to 21-14.
"We hit some balls hard, squared up a few balls that were just right at people," head coach Clint Myers said after the game. "We're moving in the right direction and that's the key thing. We knocked the strikeouts down and barreled some more balls -- some nights they fall through."
Kaylee Carlson started inside the circle for the Tigers and kept her perfect record (11-0) intact lasting 5.0 innings and allowing four hits. Freshman Makayla Martin picked up three strikeouts in her 2.0 innings of relief work to close the door for Auburn as the team their 11th straight win.
Longwood took an initial 1-0 lead in the game with an unearned run crossing the plate during the first inning from a throwing error by Emily Carosone trying to turn a double play. The senior second baseman quickly made up for the miscue in the bottom half of of the frame launching her eighth home run of the year to put Auburn back on top 2-1.
Carosone had half of Auburn's hits in the game going 2-for-2 and accepted her 73rd career hit by pitch.
The Tigers used the Lancers' mistakes to their advantage after putting the first three runners on board in the second inning. Madi Gipson's leadoff walk turned into a run on a passed ball and a wild pitch allowed Casey McCrackin to cross the plate after reaching on a walk. Pinch-hitter Anna Gibbs grounded into a force-out in between the errant pitches and plated Courtney Shea, who reached base on a double.
