AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" A season-high crowd of 3,464 fans saw Auburn fight to the very end with Georgia but come up short in a 57-51 loss Sunday at Auburn Arena.
The Tigers (15-11, 5-7 SEC) shot a season-low 24.6 percent and gave up 32 defensive rebounds to Georgia (13-12, 5-7), who overcame 22 turnovers to earn its second straight victory over Auburn.
Brandy Montgomery scored 16 points while Katie Frerking added 13 and Janiah McKay had 12. Frerking was the Tigers' leading rebounder with eight.
"Just an off night," Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. "Nothing went in. You're not going to win with Katie shooting 4-for-20 and Janiah shooting 3-for-14, shooting 16-for-25 from the free throw line, giving up 15 offensive rebounds, getting outrebounded by 17, you're not going to win. You're just not going to win like that."
Auburn scored 16 points off 22 Georgia turnovers, but the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds, turning those into 19 second-chance points. The Tigers also had plenty of opportunities at the free-throw line in the second half but finished 16-of-25 (64%) from the line.
Georgia led for the majority of the game, but neither team could gain a foothold until the Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the final minute. Georgia led by one after one quarter (14-13), again by one at halftime (26-25) and by four after three quarters (42-38).
A 3-pointer from Janiah McKay pulled the Tigers within a point at 48-47 with 4:27 to play, but the Tigers would make just one more field goal and two free throws the rest of the way.
Georgia shot 40.4 percent from the field and connected on 16-of-20 free throw (80%). The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded Auburn 47-30. Caliya Robinson led Georgia with 13 points off the bench, and Mackenzie Engram had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Auburn returns to action Thursday night at Ole Miss. Game time is 8 p.m. with the broadcast on SEC Network.
