AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 26 Auburn women's tennis team advanced to the winner's bracket of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a 4-1 win in its opening match against the University of Denver.
The defending title holders clinched the doubles point in a timely fashion. Junior Caroline Turner and sophomore Georgie Axon claimed court two with a 6-2 win over Denver's Camille Verden-Anderson and Gracia Mboko. The freshman tandem of Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Denver's Anna Riedmiller and Hada Chang on court three.
The Tigers carried their momentum from doubles into singles play. Freshman Madeline Meredith claimed the first singles win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Denver's Arisha Ladhani on court five. That win was Meredith's fourth in a row, bumping her up to 9-1 in singles play this spring season.
Senior Andie Dikosavljevic extended Auburn's lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Denver's Camille Verden-Anderson on court four. The win was also Dikosavljevic's fourth in a row, giving her a 6-1 record this spring.
Anna Riedmiller started a comeback attempt for Denver with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Auburn's Georgie Axon on court six. Auburn senior Alizee Michaud, however, responded by clinching the match with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win on court two. Michaud bolstered another impressive record for the Tigers as well as she won her fifth straight, pushing her to 9-1 in singles this spring.
The Tigers will advance to the winner's bracket to face No. 5 Illinois on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT. The winner of that match will play in the championship game on Saturday at noon CT.
