AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 16 Auburn women's tennis team fell short against No. 4 Vanderbilt to open SEC play, losing 4-1 in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday.
In doubles, Vanderbilt started off hot, clinching the doubles point in the first two sets. Christina Rosca and Amanda Meyer won the first set for the Commodores with a 6-2 win on court three over Auburn's freshman tandem of Madeline Meredith and Jaeda Daniel. Emma Kurtz and Emily Smith clinched the point by defeating Auburn's Georgie Axon and Caroline Turner 6-3 on court two.
The Commodores carried their momentum into singles. No. 120 Emma Kurtz claimed the first singles point for Vanderbilt with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic on court five. No. 56 Astra Sharma gave the Commodores a 3-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-2 over Auburn's No. 60 Jaeda Daniel on court one.
Madeline Meredith started a comeback attempt for Auburn with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Vanderbilt's Amanda Meyer on court four. Meredith also extended her singles win streak to seven and improved her spring singles record to 12-1 with that win. Vanderbilt's Summer Dvorak, however, closed the door on the Tigers with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Auburn's Georgie Axon on court six to seal the deal.
Senior Alizee Michaud was another bright spot for the Tigers in singles as she was two sets away from defeating No. 5 Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt on court two.
The Tigers next action will be in Lexington, Ky. as they take on No. 15 Kentucky at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 4 in the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex.
