AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 15 Auburn women's tennis team was defeated by No. 10 South Carolina 4-1 on Thursday at home in the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Tigers and Gamecocks were neck and neck throughout doubles play, but South Carolina took the point. Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit won the first doubles set over Auburn's Georgie Axon and Caroline Turner 6-4 on court two. Paige Cline and Hadley Berg then clinched the point for the Gamecocks with a 6-4 win over Auburn's No. 67 tandem of Taylor Russo and Alizee Michaud on court one.
Despite losing the point, the freshman tandem of Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith was leading South Carolina's Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher 6-5 on court two when the point was clinched.
In singles, the Gamecocks finished what they started. No. 52 Ingrid Martins defeated Auburn's Alizee Michaud 6-3, 6-2 on court one for the first singles point of the day. No. 79 Jaeda Daniel, however, brought the Tigers back within a point with a 6-3, 6-2 win of her own over No. 31 Hadley Berg on court two. That win was Daniel's fourth straight and moved her to 11-5 in singles this spring.
Paige Cline gave the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic on court four. Mia Horvit clinched the match for South Carolina with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Auburn's Madeline Meredith on court three.
Auburn is now 16-6 on the season and 4-2 in SEC Play. The Tigers' next match will be back at home against No. 18 Florida on Saturday, March 24 at noon.
