NCAA Championships - Saturday Prelims
MINNEAPOLIS - Auburn will have three individual swims plus an A Final relay during the final session of the 2018 Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota on Saturday. Zach Apple (100 free), Peter Holoda (100 free) and Tommy Brewer (200 breast) will all swim in consolation finals of their respective events while the 400 free relay team will be in the race for a national championship following prelims Saturday morning.
400 Freestyle Relay
Auburn will be in Lane 8 of the Championship Final after clocking a 2:49.30 in the morning. Apple led off in 41.75, which was the fastest 100 split in the field and just .11 seconds off a lifetime best. He was followed by Liam McCloskey (42.82), Peter Holoda (41.7) and Santiago Grassi (43.03) as Auburn earned a top-8 relay spot for the first time this week.
100 Freestyle
Apple (41.85) and Holoda (42.17) are both in the B Final after getting through with the 10th and 15th fastest times of the morning, respectively. For the senior Holoda, this is the first time he has earned a nighttime swim in the event, with his previous highest placing coming last season when he was 19th. Apple finished 14th in the event last year.
200 Breaststroke
Tommy Brewer swam a 1:54.27, which was just .21 off his lifetime best from the 2017 SEC Championships. The junior qualified 15th, marking the first nighttime swim of his career. Last year he finished 19th in the event.
200 Backstroke
Hugo Gonzalez swam a 1:41.41 and finished 27th overall.
200 Butterfly
In his final collegiate swim, Luis Martinez went a season-best 1:44.48 to finish 37th.
