AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 15 Auburn women's tennis team was taken down by No. 8 Georgia 4-1 on the road at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday.
The Bulldogs came out firing in doubles. The No. 9 tandem of Katarina Jokic and Mariana Gould claimed the first doubles set with a 6-1 win over Auburn's Georgie Axon and Caroline Turner on court two. Soon after, the No. 11 team of Morgan Coppoc and Elena Christofi clinched the point for Georgia with a 6-2 win over Auburn's No. 67 duo of Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo on court one.
In singles, the star-studded lineup of Georgia did not let up. Mariana Gould got things started for the Bulldogs with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Auburn's Georgie Axon on court five. No. 79 Jaeda Daniel, however, cut the Tigers' deficit to one with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Georgia's No. 45 Kennedy Shaffer on court two.
That win was Daniel's fourth over a ranked opponent in singles this spring, and it also improved her spring singles record to 13-6. Beyond that, the match remained under Georgia's control.
Elena Christofi widened the gap again for the Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Auburn's Taylor Russo on court four. No. 110 Morgan Cuppoc then sealed the deal for Georgia with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Auburn's Alannah Griffin on court six.
Auburn is now 16-9 on the season and 4-5 in SEC play. The Tigers' next action will be on the road again as they take on Missouri and No. 48 Arkansas next weekend.
Auburn will travel to Columbia, Mo. to face Missouri on Friday, April 6, at 3 p.m. at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Tigers will then head to Fayetteville, Ark. to take on Arkansas on Sunday, April 8, at 1 p.m. at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
