Auburn rising sophomore Kaleigh Telfer earned a runner-up finish at the South African Amateur Match Play Championship earlier this week, highlighting the first part of July for Auburn women's golfers in summer competition.
In the 32-player field, Telfer won her first four matches before falling in the championship match, 2 & 1.
It was one of two runner-up finishes for Telfer so far in July. She was also the runner-up in the 54-hole Gauteng North Women's Open July 1-2. She shot rounds of 75-72-78=225 (+9) to tie for second place, six strokes behind the tournament medalist.
In other action, rising junior Kayley Marschke and rising senior Melanie Talbott competed in the U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier in Braselton, Ga., on July 9. Both missed the cut with Talbott posting a 76 (+5) and Marschke shooting 81 (+10). And redshirt freshman Brooke Sansom played in the North & South Women's Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2, shooting 81-80=161 (+19) in the qualifying rounds and not advancing to match play.
Across the pond, rising junior Elena Hualde is representing her home country of Spain, rising sophomore Julie McCarthy is playing for Ireland, and incoming freshman Anika Bolčíková is playing for her native Slovakia in the European Ladies Team Championship in Austria. That tournament runs through Saturday.
Coming up next week, rising sophomore Mychael O'Berry will compete in the U.S. Girls Junior Championship in Pebble Beach, Calif. That tournament begins Monday with stroke play qualifying and continues through next Saturday.
