WEST POINT, Miss. – In August, Megan Schofill opened the U.S. Women's Amateur at Old Waverly with a 69 (-3) in the first round. On Sunday, at the same course, the freshman matched that score with a 69 (-3) in the first round of the Magnolia Invitational.

It was a new career-low round at Auburn for Schofill, who birdied three of the final seven holes and finished with four birdies on the day. She currently sits atop the player leaderboard, two shots ahead of the next competitor.

"It's obvious that Megan loves Old Waverly," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. "Coach (Andrew) Pratt gave her some things to work on in her putting, and it paid off today. She struggled a bit off the tee but made up for it elsewhere."

The rest of the team followed Schofill's lead, and through the first 18 holes, Auburn is in second place after shooting a 290 (+2) at Old Waverly Golf Club (Par 72, 6,320 yards).

Junior Julie McCarthy, making her 2019-20 debut, picked up where she left off last year with a round of 72 (E) that included pars on 16 of the 18 holes. McCarthy, a preseason All-American nomination, is tied for 6th overall.

Senior Kayley Marschke also made the lineup for the first time this season, and with a 2-over 74 on Sunday, she is in a tie for 15th after the first round.

Kaleigh Telfer and Brooke Sansom are currently tied for 21st on the leaderboard after each golfer finished with a 75 (+3) in round one. Telfer started strong with two birdies on the front nine and finished second on the team with three birdies on the day.

Playing as an individual, junior Mychael O'Berry shot a 79 (+7) and is in a tie for 39th.

LSU leads the field at 1-over par (289), followed by Auburn (290), Mississippi State (294), Tennessee (295), Chattanooga (295), Kennesaw State (299), Tulsa (302), Southern Mississippi (309), Iowa (311), South Florida (320) and Memphis (321).

Because of weather concerns for Tuesday, all 11 teams are expected to play the second and third rounds (36 holes) on Monday to conclude the tournament. Auburn will be paired with LSU and Mississippi State. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com

"The team goal today was to get into the final pairing tomorrow since we will be playing 36 holes due to a dismal weather report for Tuesday," Luellen said. "We accomplished that by playing with great determination. We need all five players in the mix tomorrow to have a chance to win."
