AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn picked up six total wins to open the spring season Friday at the Orlando Invitational, being played at the USTA National Campus.
The Tigers earned a pair of doubles wins and four singles victories in a hidden dual format against players from Virginia, UCF and Texas Tech.
"Today was a great start to our spring season," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "We are here to play competitive matches and work on our craft. Overcoming adversity requires focusing on solutions when it is most difficult to do so. We are excited to compete again tomorrow."
Auburn picked up two wins in doubles during the morning session. The team of freshmen Carolyn Ansari and Selin Ovunc earned a 6-3 win over a team from UCF. Freshman Caraline Scheufler and junior Lindsay Song also picked up a 6-3 victory over UCF.
In singles, Auburn split eight matches with Texas Tech. Senior Taylor Russo, ranked No. 79 nationally, defeated TT's Margarita Skriabina 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Sophomore Yu Chen, who comes into the spring ranked 123rd nationally, won in straight sets over the Red Raiders' Lisa Mays, 6-1, 6-3. Ovunc took down Texas Tech's Nell Miller, 6-3, 6-2, and senior Georgie Axon downed Tech's Kennedy Bridgforth, 6-1, 6-3.
Play continues Saturday as Auburn will face Texas Tech in doubles and Kansas in singles. Live video is available at ustanationalcampus.com, but no live scoring is available.
