AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn women's tennis team is back in action this weekend at the Yarbrough Tennis Center for a total of three matches Saturday and Sunday.
The Tigers (3-1) will play twice Saturday, hosting Georgia State at noon CT and Alabama A&M at 3 p.m. Auburn will then return to the courts Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Memphis. Admission is free to all Auburn home tennis matches.
"I love that we have three hungry teams coming in who want to beat us," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "I love that type of pressure and that type of expectation, and I think it's really good for our players to face that."
Auburn is coming off a 1-1 weekend at the ITA Kick-Off event in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tigers dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 2 North Carolina on its home courts Friday before coming back with a 4-2 win over Columbia Saturday.
"We competed well against North Carolina," Lilley said. "They're one of the best teams in the country, so to see us go toe-to-toe so early in the season with a team of that caliber, I thought that was incredibly encouraging. Then we came out after losing a disappointing doubles point to Columbia, and every single court responded (in singles). To see us win five out of six first sets, that was a big statement."
The Tigers have posted an 11-4 singles mark in dual match play so far, led by 2-0 records from senior Georgie Axon and freshman Carolyn Ansari. Junior Madeline Meredith has posted a 3-1 record. In doubles, Auburn has been led by the team of senior Taylor Russo and freshman Selin Ovunc, ranked ninth nationally with a 3-1 dual record and 10-3 overall mark.
Georgia State (1-1) had last week off following a loss at Baylor and a win over McNeese State. Alabama A&M (0-1) fell at Alabama two weeks ago and faces Troy Friday before coming to Auburn Saturday. And Memphis (1-2) fell to Arkansas and Ole Miss before defeating UT Martin in its first weekend of the season.
