Tigers tied for lead after first round at Lake Oconee

GREENSBORO Ga. – The Auburn women's golf team is tied for first after shooting a 5-over 293 in the first round at the Lake Oconee Invitational. 

The Tigers were powered by junior Mychael O'Berry who shot a 71 (-1) with three birdies and is currently tied for second on the individual leaderboard. All seven of the team's golfers in the field are in the top 30 going into Saturday's second round. 

Auburn led the field in pars and also shot a round-best 2-under on par 5s as a team. 

Senior Elena Hualde Zúñiga and freshman Megan Schofill both shot a 73 (+1) to stay within striking distance of the leader. The duo, who are both in a tie for eighth, were particularly strong on par 5s. Schofill shot 2-under and Hualde Zúñiga was 1-under. The latter led the field in pars with 15 for the round. 

As a team, the Tigers combined to make 12 birdies. Senior Kayley Marschke, who is playing as an individual, matched O'Berry with three birdies. She carded a 77 (+5). 

Coming off a win at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, junior Kaleigh Telfer shot a 76 (+4) with 14 pars, the third-most in the field. Telfer is currently tied for 22nd, one stroke back of fellow junior Julie McCarthy who posted a 75 (+3) on Friday. Playing as an individual, McCarthy is in a tie for 14th overall. 

Sophomore Brooke Sansom rounded out the scoring for Auburn with a 77 (+5). 

The Tigers share the team lead with Mercer at 5-over par (293). They're followed by East Carolina (303), UNC Wilmington (303), South Alabama (305), Chattanooga (305), North Florida (307), South Dakota State (311), Daytona State (304), Wofford (316), Delaware (320), East Tennessee State (323), Albany (334) and UNC Asheville (341). 

Auburn will be paired with Mercer and UNC Wilmington for the second round with the first group teeing off at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday. Live scoring can be found on Birdiefire.com
