AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn swim and dive team put together another impressive performance Saturday at the Auburn Diving Invitational with multiple first-place and second-place finishes and a handful of lifetime-best swims from those competing.
Senior Jaqueline Hippi gave the Tigers an early highlight with a win in the women's 400 IM. Hippi finished in 4:17.51, setting a new lifetime best.
"Jaqi dropped four seconds from her performance this morning and won the 400 IM. I'm really happy for her," Auburn head coach Gary Taylor said.
Coming off a standout performance Friday, Auburn senior Camille Porter took second in the women's 100 butterfly with a time of 54.45. Teammates Jane Johnson (54.58) and Sierra Jett (54.67) finished third and fourth behind Porter with new lifetime bests in the event. Like Hippi and Porter, Jett is also a senior this year.
It wasn't all seniors who shined Saturday, though. Freshmen Hannah Mattson and Annie O'Dare both swam season-best times in their respective events during prelims and then earned top-three finishes in finals – Mattson in the 100 backstroke and O'Dare in the 100 breaststroke.
On the men's side, freshman Cole Bruns won the final in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.24. His prelims time (48.81) was a new lifetime best.
"Cole Bruns breaks 50 for the first time ever this morning, and then comes back tonight with a 49-low," Taylor said. "And Davis Edwards swims a lifetime best in the 100 backstroke as well."
Edwards, also a freshman, finished the 100 backstroke in 50.33 to place third.
"There was a lot of good energy in the facility," Taylor said. "Some good performances, lifetime bests. That's what we want to see at this point, so we're on target from that standpoint."
The Tigers will wrap up the Auburn Invitational on Sunday with another round of prelims and finals. The scheduled events for both the men and women include the 1650 free, the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
