BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former Auburn standout Layton Johns has been selected as Auburn's 2020 Southeastern Conference Legend. Johns will be honored posthumously at the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., March 11-15.
Johns, who was 60 when he died on June 7, 2002, was a two-time All-SEC performer for the Tigers in both 1962 and 1963, while being a fixture in the starting lineup for three seasons.
A native of Nahunta, Ga., Johns was a two-time statistical champion in the SEC for field goal percentage in 1962 and 1963. He also finished second in the country in 1962 with a .584 field goal percentage.
Johns pulled down 10.2 rebounds per game during his time on The Plains, which stands as the second-best mark in the Auburn record books. He also finished his career with a .571 field goal percentage, good for sixth in program history.
In 1963, Johns became the second player in program history to be selected in the NBA Draft when he was chosen with the 34th pick of the fourth round by the Los Angeles Lakers.
Johns is one of 14 former greats from the conference's member institutions to be recognized.
