AUBURN, Ala. – After a pair of wins over top-50 opponents, Auburn sophomore Carolyn Ansari has been named the SEC Newcomer of the Week for women's tennis, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Ansari put together one of the best weeks of her collegiate career in the Tigers' matches at Tennessee and Georgia. She defeated two top-50 opponents in singles and helped clinch the doubles point at Georgia.

In Auburn's match at Tennessee, she provided the Tigers' lone point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over 45th-ranked Carly Briggs for her highest-ranked win to that point. But she bettered that Saturday at Georgia, taking down 12th-ranked and previously unbeaten Meg Kowalski in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to end a string of 26 straight wins for Kowalski.

Along with partner Selin Ovunc, Ansari also helped the Tigers pick up the doubles point at Georgia as they downed UGA's Christofi and Coppoc in a tiebreaker to give Auburn an early lead in the match. Ansari is 11-3 in dual match singles this season and 7-2 in SEC play.

This is the first SEC weekly honor for Ansari and the third of the season for Auburn. Georgie Axon was named SEC Player of the Week after the Tigers' wins over South Carolina and Florida in February, and Adeline Flach earned Freshman of the Week honors following a pair of wins at Arkansas and Missouri last month.

The Tigers begin postseason play at the SEC Tournament next Tuesday in Tuscaloosa. Auburn's seed, opponent and match time have yet to be determined.
