CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Auburn women's tennis team wrapped up their stay at the Wahoowa Invitational Sunday, hosted by the University of Virginia.
"We played some really competitive matches and we definitely commend the effort in singles," associate head coach Megan Falcon said. "Competing is a privilege, and cherishing every opportunity is an important step for us to take in the growth process. When to make points expensive with competitive grit, thus increasing the toll it takes to beat you, is something as a coaching staff we must find a way to teach much better than we have."
The Tigers came up short in four singles matches Sunday with two of them going to third-set match tiebreaks. In a battle of top-40 opponents, Auburn's 33rd-ranked Selin Ovunc came up just short to Old Dominion's No. 36-ranked Yuliia Starodubsteva, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4). Georgie Axon dropped a three-setter to ODU's 77th-ranked Tatsiana Sasnouskaya, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (4). Madeline Meredith fell to ODU's Alexandra Victorovich, 6-1, 6-4, and Anastasia Astakhova dropped a 6-4, 7-6 decision to ODU's Shahar Biran, 6-4, 7-6.
In doubles, Ovunc and Astakhova fell to the 57th-ranked pair of Starodubsteva and Sasnouskaya from ODU, 6-2.
Auburn will be back in action next weekend at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
