TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – It was another four-win day in singles for the Auburn women's tennis team Saturday as a quartet of Tigers advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Auburn tallied five total victories on the day, winning four main draw singles matches and a doubles match in the round of 32.
"Today we battled well as a team," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "With completely different conditions than yesterday, our commitment to being professional and competitive gave us opportunities. Tomorrow will bring more challenges for us to navigate with the same edginess and grit."
Auburn players will comprise a quarter of the round of 16 with four players advancing Saturday. Adeline Flach picked up the first win for Auburn, defeating Ole Miss' Ludmila Kareisova, 6-4, 6-2. Georgie Axon followed shortly thereafter with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Chloe Cirotte from Mississippi State. Carolyn Ansari, ranked 45th, downed Alabama's Anne Marie Hiser in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. And Ariana Arseneault took down Northwestern State's Rozalie Dohnalova, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.
Three matches were played by Tigers in the singles consolation as well. Yu Chen fell to Ole Miss' Annaelle LaClercq-Fisher in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). The other two matches went to third-set match tiebreaks – Anastasia Astakhova fell to the Rebels' Kelsey Mize, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3), and Madeline Meredith dropped a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (7) decision to Adela Wasserbauerova of UAB.
In doubles, the 19th-ranked team of Axon and Flach won their opening match of the tournament, defeating Northwestern State's Klevisar and Minetti, 8-5. But the Tiger tandem would fall short in the round of 16 to South Alabama's Kohoutova and Tutunaru, 8-3. Arseneault and Meredith fell in the round of 32 to Gabrielsen and Zadori of Ole Miss, 8-5.
