BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following an already impressive weekend of volleyball for the Tigers, equally brilliant performances from the duo of Madison Scheer and Sarah Morton have earned them SEC Freshman of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Scheer was nothing short of dominant in two matches against rival Alabama. With 19 kills on 42 swings and just two errors, her offensive firepower helped Auburn erase a one-set deficit to earn the Orange and Blue's first victory in Foster Auditorium over the weekend.
A day later, the Eureka, Missouri native piled up 20 kills with a .486 hitting percentage to solidify the Tiger's series sweep of the Tide. In total, Scheer finished with 39 kills on a monstrous .443 percentage.
Not to be outdone, Sarah Morton was equally as impressive in the back row. Seemingly running down every ball hit in her direction, Morton grabbed 19 digs and added an ace from the service line as the cherry on top.
On Sunday, the Munster, Indiana product was even better. Chasing down 20 digs, her efforts guided Auburn to hold Alabama to just .133 hitting, keeping her squad undefeated in the process.
In 13 starts as a Tiger, Morton has reached the double-digit dig total in 12 of them and has done so in 10 consecutive matches.
Monday's awards mark the third and fourth honor for head coach Brent Crouch's team this season. Kendal Kemp and Jackie Barrett have both been honored early in the season.
Auburn Volleyball returns to Neville Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 28 for its SEC home opener against Mississippi State. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. CT and admission is free. For the Orange and Blue faithful not in the Auburn area, the match will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
