AUBURN, Ala. — Powered by 11 event wins, and 33 personal bests. The Auburn track & field team opened its outdoor season win strong fashion over the weekend at Hutsell-Rosen track.
The 2023 season marks the 1st year at the helm of the program for Auburn track & field head coach Leroy Burrell.
Event wins came by way of Abasiono Akpan (400mH), Chante Clinkscale (100m), Erik Ebel (hammer throw), Dontavious Hill (high jump), Shaniya Holley (javelin), Maura Huwalt (shot put and discus), Janaya Jones (long jump), Micheal May (long jump), Luke Roberts (400m), Amy Warren (triple jump), and the women's 4x400m relay.
Huwalt broke her own school record in the women's discus on her way to win event. The South Park, Pennsylvania native threw a new best mark 56.34m/184-10 to best her previous mark of 56.21m/184-5 set at last year's outdoor conference championship. Auburn went on to sweep the women's long throws making history as the first team in conference history to achieve such a feat at the conference meet. Fellow teammates Hague (43.26m/141-11) and Love (42.08m/138-00) also threw for personal bests this weekend.
Akpan captured to the 400m hurdles title in her first hurdle race of the year. She finished nearly one second ahead of Auburn track and field alum Asia Jinks. Senior Lalah Hasbrouck ran a new personal best 1:03.61 to finish fourth.
In her outdoor season debut, Clinkscale recorded a new personal best time in both the 100m and 200m dashes. The freshman took the top spot in the 100m clocking 11.42 and finished second in the 200m crossing the line in 23.56. Not far behind was teammate Niya Benton-Andrews crossing the line in 11.84 and 24.44, respectfully.
Senior Ebel took the top spot in the hammer throw in NCAA number four mark 66.58m/218-05 followed by Kyle Moison in second with a toss of 63.84m/209-05. In his first outdoor season in an Auburn uniform, freshman John Leonard threw a personal best 52.84m/173-04 to take eighth.
On the women's side, Huwalt threw the NCAA leading mark to win gold and became number four in program history in the women's shot put (16.39m/53-09.25) followed by new personal best throws from freshman Louisa Bohner (14.95m/49-00.75) and Megan Hague (14.65m/48-00.75) who became number eight and nine all-time, and sophomore Trinity Love (13.72m/45-00.25).
Auburn went 1-2 in the women's javelin. All-American honorable mention Holley won the event in 44.96m/147-06. Freshman Maddie Roberts followed suit throwing 40.99m/134-05 for a new personal best mark.
In his final season opener, Hill jumped the NCAA number two mark of 2.15m/7-00.50 to win the men's high jump. Just one week ago at the NCAA Indoor Championship, Hill cleared the same height to finish fourteenth overall and garner the fourth All-American of his career. TJ Funches (2.05m/6-08.75) and Matthew Cless (2.00m/6-06.75) took fourth and sixth in the event, respectfully.
Auburn took the top spot in three of the four horizontal jumps courtesy of freshman May, junior Jones, and senior Warren. On her fifth jump of the competition, Warren leaped out 12.69m/41-07.75 to become number ten in school history and number four in the NCAA this season.
Other notable performances came by way of Alyssa Quinones-Mixon and Rhiannon Held in the women's pole vault. Quinones-Mixon finished second clearing 3.95m/12-11.50 notching number two all-time while Held finished third clearing 3.85m/12-07.50 to become number four all-time in program history. On the men's side, senior Matthew Asplund finished second in the event clearing a new personal best mark of 5.15m/16-10.75, which ranks him number ten in the NCAA this season and number six in Auburn history.
The weekend concluded with a first place finish in the Women's 4x400m relay running NCAA number four time 3:41.49 and a second place finish in the men's 4x400m relay clocking 3:15.53.
