TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Senior high jumper Dontavious Hill posted the nation's top jump and eight other Tigers posted personal bests to highlight day one of the FSU Relays for the Auburn track and field team at Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Florida.
Hill jumped a national leading mark 2.24m/7-4.25 to eclipsed his previous personal best of 2.23m/7-3.75 to win gold. His mark remains the second-best performer in Auburn history behind Donald Thomas's school record of 2.35m/7-8.5 set in 2007.
Auburn swept the women's and men's hammer throw titles courtesy of seniors Madi Malone and Erik Ebel. On her final throw of the competition, Malone threw 68.79m/225-8 to finish ahead of teammate Dani Gregory who moved up to number nine all-time in program history with a toss of 57.35m/188-2. On the men's side the Tigers swept the podium with Ebel, junior Kyle Moison (65.99m/216-6) and senior Kyle Brown (64.42m/211-4). Moison threw a new personal best on his first attempt of the competition.
In the women's pole vault sophomore Rhiannon Held and junior Lexie Leinneweber cleared new personal bests of 3.95m/12-11.50 to finish first and second, respectively. The duo also became the number two performers in school history just behind school record holder Jessie Johnson. Freshman Alyssa Quinones-Mixon took third clearing 3.65m/11-11.75. On the men's side, senior Matthew Asplund won gold after clearing 4.90m/16-0.75.
For the second time in as many meets, junior Janaya Jones won the women's long jump leaping out 6.28m/20-7.25 to become number seven performer in program history. Senior Amy Warren (6.04m/19-9.75) and Chantoba Bright (5.89m/19-4) were close behind, finishing third and fourth respectfully. On her final jump of the competition, Warren set a new personal best mark.
Ethan Richter has a solid outing in the men's shot put taking third with a season-best mark 17.30m/56-9.25. Freshman duo Grant Griffin (17.29m/56-8.75) and Matthew Rueff (17.14m/56-2.75) finished behind Richter in fourth and fifth place, respectfully.
Other notable performances came by way of senior Maura Huwalt and Niya Benton-Andrews. Huwalt finished second in the women's shot put launching one 16.35m/53-7.75 while Benton-Andrews set a new personal-best of 23.94 in the women's 200m for third place, second place among collegians. Senior Hannah Tarwater won the women's 5,000m with a personal-best time 16:55.89.
The second day of action in Tallahassee will begin with the women's discus throw at 9:30 a.m. CT with the men's 4x400 relay concluding of the meet at 1:50 p.m. CT.
