AUBURN, Ala.— The Auburn track & field program will have 25 athletes competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, May 24-27. Each athlete and event will compete over the four-day meet with an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 7-10, in Austin, Texas.
Auburn will have nine men competing in six events to kick start the competition on Wednesday, starting at 10 a.m. ET with Erik Ebel, Kyle Brown and Kyle Moison in the hammer throw.
"We told our athletes, go out and run your best race" Tigers head coach Leroy Burrell said. "And if you get control of your race, your field event, your performance, then you can back off a little bit in qualifying, but each round gets a little bit tougher. But the point is to qualify and advance to the final round in Austin so you treat it as such."
The top 48 individual and top 24 relay declarations in the East and West Regions earned the opportunity to compete in their respective preliminary meet. Both the East and West Preliminaries will take the top 12 finishers in each event, with all 24 squaring off for top honors at NCAA Championships. The West Preliminaries will be held at California State University, in Sacramento, California.
Of the 25 competing, seven Tigers have competed previously at NCAA Outdoors. The men include Favour Ashe, Kyle Brown, Dontavious Hill, and Moitalel Mpoke, with the women including Sanaa Barnes, Madi Malone, Maura Huwalt, and Shaniya Holley.
Another NCAA Outdoors qualifier is junior John Murray, who has already punched his ticket to Nationals in the decathlon. Murray will be competing in his first NCAA Outdoor Championship in Austin.
