AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn shortstop Cooper Weiss and right-handed pitcher Christian Herberholz have agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles, respectively.
A graduate transfer in his lone season on The Plains, Weiss turned in a .291 batting average in 52 games played and ranked second on the team in runs (41), hits (55) and doubles (11) and third in home runs (eight) and RBI (37). He collected multiple hits in 16 contests and drove in multiple runs 10 times.
Weiss ranked second in the SEC with 27 stolen bases, the most by an Auburn player since 2012 and tied for the sixth most in program history. He turned in a .974 fielding percentage while playing in all but one game.
A two-year member of the Tigers, Herberholz made 33 career appearances, including 15 starts, and turned in a 4.76 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 90.2 innings pitched.
The Scottsboro, Alabama native played a pivotal role in Auburn’s second half run in 2023, leading the team with a 2.52 ERA in his last 12 appearances and five starts. He led the team and ranked third in the Southeastern Conference with a 2.30 ERA in league play a year ago before ranking second on the team in strikeouts (49) and third in innings pitched (43.1) this season.
Weiss and Herberholz are the fourth and fifth players to enter professional baseball after Chase Allsup (Baltimore Orioles; fourth round), Tanner Bauman (New York Yankees; ninth round) and Will Cannon (Cincinnati Reds; 12th round) were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft earlier this week.
