AUSTIN, Texas – No. 23 Auburn softball (21-10, 0-8 SEC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but No. 2 Texas (30-2, 4-1 SEC) scored seven unanswered runs to walk off the series win Saturday at Red and Charline McCombs Field.
“We came out and fought,” co-head coach Chris Malveaux said. “We really put yesterday behind us and treated it like a new day. We competed. It’s a tough team to play against and a tough environment. They are loaded, but I felt like we fought and gave ourselves a chance to win. That’s all you can ask for.”
AnnaLea Adams continued to put up insane numbers at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. KK McCrary slugged an RBI double while Anna Wohlers and Rose Roach both added RBI singles for the Tigers.
Icess Tresvik earned the start in the circle and tossed a pair of shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks with a strikeout. SJ Geurin suffered the loss as she fell to 14-4 in the circle.
Auburn jumped out to an early start as Tresvik led off the game with an infield single. Adams connected with her sixth home run of the season with a fly ball that carried over the left field wall to give the Tigers their first lead of the series.
Texas had an opportunity in the home half of the opening frame with bases loaded and one out, but the Tiger defense turned its 18th double play of the season to silence the threat.
Adams sparked the Auburn offense again in the third with a one-out single to right field. McCrary made it a 3-0 Tiger lead with a double down the left field line, before taking third on the throw to the plate. Wohlers drove her home with a single to right field.
After a walk to Amela Lech, Texas recorded the second out of the inning with a strikeout, but Roach came through with a clutch two-out single through the left side to push the lead to five runs.
Tresvik and Geurin kept the Longhorns off the board until the fourth inning when Leighann Goode ended the shutout bid with a three-run home run to left field.
With Longhorns on the corners with two outs in the fifth, Geurin forced a weak ground ball in the infield, but all hands were safe and allowed a run to score to cut the Tiger lead to 5-4. Texas put two in scoring position with one out in the sixth. Geurin forced a pop up to third before Roach made a run-saving snag to keep the Tigers in front heading into the seventh. Texas walked off the game in the seventh behind a Katie Stweart three-run home run to left center.
