LEXINGTON, Kentucky—The Auburn track and field team concluded the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday with five silver medals and a pair of school records from hurdler Ja’Kobe Tharp and distance runner Brenda Jepchirchir during the third and final day at the University of Kentucky campus.
Tharp broke his own school mark in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.15 to finish second in the event. The SEC champion as a freshman, Tharp became the Tigers first back-to-back medalist in the event since Ty Akins in 2007 and 2008.
Another outstanding hurdles performance came from sophomore Ana-Liese Torian who claimed silver in women’s 100m hurdles to become Auburn’s first medalist in the event since Josanne Lucas won gold in 2006. Torian crossed in a lifetime best 12.92, the second fastest time in AU history.
Jepchirchir shattered Auburn’s 5,000m record as the freshman from Iten, Kenya, ran 15:40.37 to break the previous record held by Joyce Kimeli by eight seconds. She also set the school freshman mark that stood since 2008 when Holly Knight ran 16:11.46. Teammate Gene Coetzee also ran a strong race with a personal-best time of 15:55.31, good for eighth place and the third best time in AU history.
In the men’s 100m dash, sophomore Kayinsola Ajayi and freshman Israel Okon finished second and fourth, respectively. Ajayi finished in 10.01, while Okon ran a 10.07. Senior Makanakaishe Charamba also took home second place in the men’s 200m with a time of 20.08. Teammate Dario Matau also scored for the Tigers, finishing seventh in 20.51.
The Auburn women’s discus throwers had a big day as three scored including senior Adrienne Adams who captured the silver medal with a season-best mark of 57.30m/188-0 on her first attempt. Senior Maura Huwalt scored in the event for the fourth time of her career with a best throw of 55.70m/182-9, while freshman Camryn Massey was eighth (53.84m/176-8).
Junior Seth Allen gave Auburn its fourth scorer in the discus throw as he finished fourth on the men’s side with a season-best throw of 59.84m/196-4 on his first attempt of the competition.
Senior All-American Vimbayi Maisvorewa became the first Auburn woman since CeCe Williams in 2012 to score at SEC outdoors at 400m as she was fifth, finishing in 52.24.
Auburn sophomore Zuriel Reed and senior Ashante Harvey finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the women’s 400m hurdles. Scoring at the SEC meet for the first time in their careers, Reed finished in 57.85 while Harvey clocked a 58.68.
In the women’s pole vault, junior Alyssa Quinones-Mixon scored for the second consecutive outdoor championship, finishing fifth after clearing 4.11m/13-5.75. In 2023, the San Antonio, Texas, native was fourth.
The Auburn men finished eighth in the team standings with 50 points while the women were 11th with 42 points.
Auburn's next competition will be the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, May 28-31, in Jacksonville, Florida on the University of North Florida campus. The nation's top 48 competitors from the east and west regions of the country will qualify for the NCAA Prelims, with the top 12 from those meets advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
