BATON ROUGE, La. - The Auburn track & field team closed out the regular season with a strong showing from the sprints crew at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
Two of the Tigers' three wins came from the sprints crew. In addition to the three event wins, the team delivered six collegiate personal best performances.
The Tigers’ 4x100m relay team demonstrated its depth by winning the event with a new combination of sprinters. The quartet utilized junior Azeem Fahmi, freshman Israel Okon, and seniors Dario Matau and Makanakaishe Charamba, clocking the fourth fastest time in the NCAA this year (38.49).
Okon dominated the field in the 100m dash, clocking a wind-aided time of 9.91 to take gold.
Joining the quartet in the winner’s circle was junior Alyssa Quinones-Mixon. For the second week in a row, the San Antonio, Texas native won the women’s pole vault. She earned a personal best mark of 4.36m, improving her standings as the second-best performer in school history.
Racing in the 100m dash with Okon, Matau and junior Ian Myers finished in the top 15. Matau crossed the line in 10.25 to take tenth and Myers in 10.29 to finish 14th.
In the men’s 110m hurdles, sophomore Ja’Kobe Tharp took silver in the event with the seventh fastest outdoor time in the country (13.35). Tharp went on to race in the 200m for the first time in his collegiate career, crossing the line in 21.06.
On the women’s side of the sprints, All-American Vimbayi Maisvorewa finished in the top three for the third time this season, racing in the 400m. With a time of 50.81, she took bronze.
Ashantae Harvey proves to be a threat in the 400m hurdles as she ran 56.59, the fifth fastest time in program history.
Senior Chante Clinkscale competed in the 100m and 200m dashes, where she ran 11.32 in the former and 23.15 in the latter.
The throws unit continues to put up solid performances for the team as junior Megan Hague placed second overall in shot put with a mark of 17.42m and freshman Camryn Massey had PR PR-worthy performance, finishing fifth (15.89m).
In discus throw, senior Adrienne Adams took silver for the second week in a row (54.18m). Senior Maura Huwalt finished just behind in third (53.70m) and junior Megan Hague had a personal record mark of 51.98m to finish fourth. Massey placed sixth (49.85m).
On the men’s side, senior Kyle Brown finished in the top five for the fourth time this outdoor season in hammer throw. He claimed fourth, his best throw coming from his third attempt (66.57m).
Junior Seth Allen threw 59.71m in discus, which was good enough for second place.
Competing in shot put on the men’s side was junior Matthew Rueff. His best throw of the event was 18.22m.
In the women’s 800m, sophomore Camila Gomes finished fifth, running 2:04.50, just 37 hundredths off her personal best time of 2:04.13. Sophomore Cady McPhail crossed in 2:09.67.
On the men’s side of the 800m, junior Rex Green delivered his best race of the season, crossing the line in 1:50.92 to finish 13th overall.
In the field, sophomores Jay Avery and Shonedra Richardson competed in the long jump for the men and women. Avery’s best mark was 7.04m and Richardson’s jump of 5.81m earned her sixth place.
The women’s 4x400m relay closed out the meet with a strong effort. The quartet of Maisvorewa, Harvey, Reed, and sophomore Oke finished fourth (3:31.23).
