BELLEAIR, Fla. – No. 8 Auburn completed the first round of the SEC Women’s Golf Championship on Friday at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida. The Tigers fired a 3-over 283 and are in ninth place on the team leaderboard. The team was led by redshirt senior Carys Worby, who is tied for fourth individually.
“We came out strong on the front nine and set a great tone early, but holes 4-6 tested us,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “The wind was swirling, and we let a little too much second-guessing creep in. That’s something we’ll clean up mentally tomorrow.
“Carys (Worby) played a beautiful round with really solid ball striking and a sharp short game. We saw some outstanding senior leadership that kept us steady throughout.”
As a team, Auburn is seven strokes behind leader Vanderbilt and three shots behind Mississippi State and Oklahoma, who are tied for seventh. The top eight teams after 54 holes will advance to match play Monday and Tuesday.
Worby started her round with a birdie on No. 10, then added two more on the front nine to make the turn at 3-under. She shot even on the back nine to card a season-low 67 (-3) and finish one shot behind the three tournament co-leaders.
Auburn freshman Charlotte Cantonis recorded three birdies en route to an even-par 70 and is tied for 21st. Auburn junior Anna Davis and sophomore Molly Brown Davidson provided the final two counting scores in the opening round, each posting a 3-over 73.
Auburn will begin round two at Pelican Golf Club at 7:50 a.m. CT off No. 1. Live scoring will be available at scoreboard.clippd.com. The semifinals will stream live on SEC Network+ on Monday, and Tuesday’s championship match will be televised on SEC Network.
