SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – No. 7 Auburn women’s golf is tied for fifth place after the opening round of the NCAA Simpsonville Regional at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, on Monday. The Tigers carded a 2-under 286 and are four strokes behind co-leaders Houston and Ole Miss.
“Today had its ups and downs, but we finished on a high note,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “5-under on the final five holes showed the fight, composure and belief this team has. We’ll make a couple adjustments off the tee tomorrow so we can focus on creating birdie opportunities instead of scrambling for pars. Tomorrow is moving day, and we’re excited for it.”
Auburn was led by sophomore Molly Brown Davidson and junior Anna Davis, who both recorded scores of 2-under 70 on Monday. Davidson bounced back from a bogey on the opening hole with three birdies before the turn. On the back nine, she played even par, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17. Davis recorded her ninth round under par this season, featuring five birdies. Both Tigers are tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard.
Auburn freshman Charlotte Cantonis was 2 over through 15 holes after a difficult stretch on the back nine but finished strong with three consecutive birdies to post a 1-under 71. Cantonis is tied for 18th after the opening round.
Auburn’s final counting score was a 3-over 75, recorded by both Carys Worby and Katie Cranston. Worby and Cranston are tied for 46th.
The top five teams from each of the six regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, to compete for the national title May 22-27. The top individual from each site not on an advancing team will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship.
