AUBURN, Ala. — Sophia Mazzoni broke the Auburn freshman javelin record for the fourth time this season to headline Auburn’s impressive day one of hosting the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hutsell-Rosen Track, Thursday.
The Tigers advanced three athletes to Saturday’s finals and recorded five personal best performances on a light first day of competition.
Mazzoni made an immediate impact in her first SEC Outdoor Championships on her first throw with a mark of 54.89m/180-1, besting her previous AU record by nearly two feet. Her performance stands as the best throw in the event by an Auburn freshman at SEC Outdoors and ranks her as the No. 4 performer in program history.
Sophomore Israel Okon advanced to finals on Saturday in the 200m with a second-place finish in the preliminary round, crossing in 20.52. Racing in just his second collegiate 200m, Okon is currently the No. 6 performer in Auburn history in the event. Fellow sophomore Mekhi Dupree will join Okon in the finals with a finish of 21.05 in his first SEC Outdoors appearance.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, senior Devin Nugent set a new personal best finish of 49.36, qualifying for finals in his first SEC Outdoors appearance. Nugent now owns the fourth-best time in the NCAA and became the No. 8 performer in AU history in the event.
Also making her first SEC Championship appearance, freshman Norah Lind placed fifth in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 63.74m/209-1, making her the No. 2 performer in AU history. Lind’s mark was the best finish by an Auburn freshman in the event since Madi Malone in 2019.
Senior John Leonard recorded his best finish at SEC Outdoors in the men’s hammer throw, placing sixth with a personal-best mark of 67.79m/222-5. The mark establishes Leonard as the No. 6 performer in Auburn history in the event.
Junior Cady McPhail delivered a personal-best performance in the women’s 800m prelims, crossing in 2:05.64 to move up to No. 4 on the AU performers list in the event.
After the conclusion of day one’s competition, the Auburn women finished seventh in the standings with eight points, while the men placed 11th with three.
