FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 1 Auburn men’s golf team came away with a runner-up finish Tuesday at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational presented by Charles Schwab, finishing +5 as a team on the par 70, 7,289-yard Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
“I’m proud of the guys after yesterday’s performance and I thought we were a little fatigued today from yesterday’s 36-hole, 100-degree outing,” head coach Nick Clinard said. “We made some sloppy swings today that really cost us, but all-in-all a good week against one of, if not the best tournament fields we will see all year.”
No. 11 Alabama came away with the team title, finishing even as a team. The Tigers came in five strokes back at 5-over. No. 14 North Carolina and No. 5 Texas Tech tied for third (+12), while No. 8 Texas and No. 10 Vanderbilt were tied for fifth (+14).
Junior Billy Davis came in a tie for sixth individually to lead Auburn, carding a 1-under 209. After going 67-69 Monday, he followed with a 3-over 73 in the final round Tuesday, totaling four birdies on the day and 11 over three rounds.
Senior Cayden Pope earned a Top 10 finish in the competitive field, earning a 1-over 211 over three rounds. He finished with an overall quiet card Tuesday, finishing with a team-best, 2-over 73 to go with his 70-69 from the first day.
A pair of Tigers in senior Josiah Gilbert and sophomore Logan Reilly went 3-over 73 Tuesday, seeing Gilbert finish tied for 20th and Reilly tied for 32nd. Freshman Alex Holder came in tied for 53rd (+11).
Auburn will take a couple weeks off from competition before heading to Wilmington, North Carolina for The Williams Cup presented by STITCH. The three-day tournament will be held at Eagle Point Golf Club, Oct. 18-20.
