Jay Boulware is in his fourth season as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Auburn.
As special teams coordinator, Boulware directed the Auburn efforts that led the SEC in kickoff return yards (1264/24.3 avg), kick return touchdowns (2), kickoff coverage (546 yards) and fewest punts returned (10) for the 2011 campaign. He also tutored All-America punter Steven Clark, a 2011 Ray Guy Award finalist.
In 2010, Boulware coached Tigers[apos] kicker Wes Byrum to consecutive record-breaking seasons which culminated with a 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Auburn a 22-19 victory over Oregon in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. Under Boulware[apos]s tutelage, Byrum set an Auburn single-season record for points by a kicker (99) in 2009 and followed that by breaking that record in 2010 with 123 points. Additionally, Byrum set a single-season Auburn record for field goal percentage (93.8), connecting on 15-of-16 field goals, and set a school record for conversions and attempts, going 54-of-54 on PAT[apos]s in his first season under Boulware.
Auburn[apos]s kickoff return defense was the third-best and 16th nationally, allowing just 19.7 yards per return in 2010. The Tigers[apos] punt return defense led the SEC and was ninth in the nation last season, allowing just 4.6 yards per return. The Tigers kickoff return unit was fourth in the SEC and 25th nationally with a 23.5 yard per return average and led the SEC with 1482 return yards.
Boulware also guided Demond Washington to an Auburn single-season record for kickoff return average, as Washington[apos]s average of 31.1 yards per return led the SEC and ranked sixth nationally. Washington also set an Auburn single-game record with 202 kickoff return yards on five returns vs. Georgia.
As tight ends coach, Boulware guided Philip Lutzenkirchen to five touchdown receptions, third-most on the team, and a 12.3 yards per catch average in 2010.
Prior to coming to Auburn, Boulware served as running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Iowa State for two seasons from 2007-08. He has also coached at Texas, Northern Illinois, Arizona, Stanford and Utah, and has coached all-conference players at three different positions in three different conferences. In 2008 under Boulware, Iowa State ranked 12th nationally in kickoff returns, behind Rivals.com second-team freshman All-American kick returner Leonard Johnson. Johnson set an NCAA FBS record with 319 kickoff return yards against Oklahoma State.
A native of Irving, Texas, Boulware was a two-year letterman at offensive line while playing for the University of Texas. He began his coaching career at Texas, first as a student coach (1994-95) and then as a graduate assistant (1996), where he helped the Longhorns to bowl games all three seasons.
Under his direction, several Boulware-coached players have earned national honors and played in the National Football League. At Northern Illinois, he recruited future All-American and current Atlanta running back Michael Turner. During Boulware[apos]s tenure at NIU, the Huskie offense ranked 12th nationally in rushing as two-time All-MAC offensive lineman Ryan Diem moved on to the NFL, where he plays for the Indianapolis Colts. While at Arizona, Boulware coached All- Pac 10 tailback Mike Bell, who now plays for the New Orleans Saints.
