Ty Akins is in his first year with Auburn track and field as a graduate assistant. Akins brings a wealth of experience to the Tiger sprinters after solid collegiate and professional careers.

During his time at Auburn, Akins was a three-time All-American. After winning the 2007 SEC Outdoor Championship in the 110mH, Akins became Auburn’s first NCAA hurdles champion since 1927 when he won the 110mH at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. His time of 13.25 still stands as the Auburn record. Akins was also a silver medalist in the 110mH at the 2005 USA Junior World Championships and Pan-American Junior Championships.

After Auburn, Akins went on to a professional career that included a gold medal in the 110mH at the African Championships in 2014. He was ranked in the Top-10 in the world twice and made the Olympic Trials in 2008 and 2012. Akins’s personal best time in the 110mH was 13.25 and 7.60 in the 60mH.

Prior to Auburn, Akins attended Bainbridge High School and trained under coach Larry Clark. The Georgia native won two state championships in the 110mH and 300mH.

Akins is married to Angel Akins and has a son Jace and a daughter Zoë.
