Philip Stringer hit the first home run of his Auburn career with one down in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough as the Auburn baseball team fell to No. 13 Ole Miss, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon at Plainsman Park.
Stringer, starting at short for the third consecutive game, went 2-for-3 on the afternoon and drove in three of Auburn's runs, adding a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
"Stringer works his tail off," Auburn head coach Tom Slater said. "He never hangs his head, he just continues to press and work and when you do that the game of baseball will reward you. Philip had a nice day, playing a nice shortstop for us as well."
Ben Jones (2-for-3, BB, 2 SB) and Luke Greinke (2-for-4, SB) both had multi-hit games for Auburn (19-11, 0-8 SEC) with Greinke scoring Auburn's second run of the game on a wild pitch in the sixth that cut the lead to 4-2 at the time.
Ole Miss' (21-8, 5-3 SEC) Lance Lynn (3-2) went 6.1 innings to earn the win, allowing all four Auburn runs on six hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Auburn's Evan Crawford (3-3) took the loss as he gave up three runs on four hits and three walks in 4.1 innings.
Auburn will try and salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at 1:30pm CT when it sends freshman righty Taylor Thompson (3-0) to the hill for his first SEC start. Ole Miss will counter with senior lefty Craig Rodriguez (1-0).
