Auburn found itself down 4-0 after the top of the first and was never able to dig itself out of the hole as the Auburn baseball team fell to No. 3 Arkansas, 12-1, on Friday night at Plainsman Park.
The Auburn (27-18, 6-13 SEC) pitching staff surrendered four home runs on the night, two to Danny Hamblin, and its offense struggled to put runners on base as Auburn finished with a season-low tying four hits against Arkansas ace Nick Schmidt.
Schmidt, who spent the summer as a pitcher with Auburn Head Coach Tom Slater on the Team USA National Team and is the reigning SEC Pitcher of the Year, went the distance for Arkansas (34-11, 14-5 SEC), surrendering just one run, walking three to go with the four hits.
Ross Smith (1-for-2) drove in Auburn's lone run of the game with an RBI single in the second. It scored Joseph Sanders (1-for-3), who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Evan Crawford (4-4) took the loss for Auburn, allowing nine runs on 10 hits in 7.0 innings.
Luke Greinke went 0-for-4 on the night to snap his 19-game hitting streak and 16-game SEC hitting streak.
The two teams will get back on the field on Saturday at 2pm. Auburn will send Fr. RHP Taylor Thompson (4-1) to the mound while Arkansas will counter with Jr. RHP Duke Welker (5-2).
