ATLANTA - Three Tigers advanced to finals Saturday at the Georgia Tech Tennis Invitational with two Auburn players pitted against each other in Sunday's championship match.
Newcomer Alex Petropoulos will face off against senior Terence Nugent at 10 a.m. Sunday in the "B" singles championship match.
Petropoulos defeated Georgia's Chris Motes, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in his quarterfinal match, following it up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Middle Tennessee's Alex McCann.
Nugent, who began the bracket as the No. 2 overall seed, defeated Louisville's Tim Barnoud 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in his quarterfinal match. In the semifinals, Nugent downed Vanderbilt's Alex Zotov 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the championship meeting with Petropoulos.
Auburn's Nick Maurillo will also be competing in a championship match on Sunday. After losing in the first round of the "B" singles, Maurillo moved to the consolation bracket and has stormed through the competition en route to a championship matchup with Georgia Tech's George Gvelesiani, Sunday at 9 a.m..
In his first match of the day, Maurillo defeated Tennessee's William Lang, 6-1, 6-4. He then took down Southern Mississippi's Alexander Arendt, 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the championship match.
Also in action in the "A" singles was senior Pawel Dilaj. Playing in his quarterfinal match, Dilaj lost to Georgia Tech's Jose Muguruza, 6-3, 7-6 (3), ending his run to the championship.
Auburn also had one doubles squad still alive on Saturday. The team of Alex Petropoulos and Alexey Tsyrenov fell to Georgia Tech's Miguel Muguruza and Eliot Potvin, 8-3.
