COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Auburn women's swimming and diving team advanced seven swimmers while placing two relays in Friday night's finals in day two of the 2008 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
Auburn enters the second night of finals in second place with 132 points, sitting behind first-place Arizona (151). California is in third with 89, followed by Texas A&M with 88. Stanford rounds out the top five with 80 points.
The Tigers opened the morning session by taking fourth in the 400 medley relay. The team of Margo McCawley, Kara Denby, Alana Dillette and Emile Ewing clocked a time of 1:38.16 - the team's second-fastest time this season.
Sophomore Ava Ohlgren finished fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:08.95 and will advance to the A Final to defend her title. Ohlgren won the 400 IM last year as a freshman.
Freshman Erica Meissner (54.85) and Dillette (54.10) both swam personal-bests in the 100 fly but did not advance to finals as they finished 48th and 40th, respectively. McCawley also swam the 100 fly, finishing 24th with a time of 53.52.
Senior Emily Kukors was the lone Tiger to advance to finals in the 200 free, touching in at 1:45.30. She finished seventh to earn a spot in the A Final.
Also competing in the 200 free were Melissa Marik (19th, 1:46.50), Maggie Bird (25th, 1:47.07), Kristen Hastrup (48th, 1:48.37), Emile Ewing (54th, 1:48.76), Caitlin Geary (59th, 1:48.97), Chelsea Haser (60th, 1:49.03) and Micah Martindale (62nd, 1:49.30).
Denby and freshman Melanie Roberts qualified for finals in the 100 breast. Denby swam a 1:00.88 to finish ninth and make the B Final and will be joined by Roberts as she finished 15th with a 1:01.43.
Also competing in the 100 breast were freshman Josefin Wede (26th, 1:02.16) and sophomore Abby MacGregor (36th, 1:03.24).
In the final event of the morning, Auburn qualified three swimmers for the 100 back B Final. Julianne McLane led the pack as she finished 10th in 53.82, setting a new personal-best, and was followed by Marik in 12th with her time of 53.90. McCawley was the last to qualify, touching in at 53.93 to finish 14th.
Dillette (54.59) and Meissner (54.81) also competed in the 100 back, finishing 23rd and 26th, respectively.
The other event on Friday's schedule is the 800 free relay, an event that Auburn holds the American record in. The 800 free relay was not swum in finals and will be a timed finals event.
