AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn men's tennis team finished its Spring Classic tournament on Sunday after taking on LSU at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
In the morning, Virginia Tech faced Arkansas with Auburn taking the courts in the afternoon. The Tigers took two of their three doubles flights, and were perfect in their singles flights to close the three-day competition.
The first doubles win came with the No. 10 ranked duo, Alexey Tsyrenov and Tim Puetz, taking a quick 8-2 victory over Neal Skupski and Mark Bowtell.
Immediately following the flight one win, senior Lukas Marsoun and newcomer Alex Stamchev logged another victory, 8-3, against Sebastian Carlsson and Jonathan Tragardh. Marsoun and Stamchev collected a 3-0 record in doubles play during the weekend.
Auburn's third pair, Milan Krnjetin and Alex Petropoulos, fell to Ryan Lissner and David Roberts, 9-7. The Tigers came alive in singles competition, with freshman Stamchev providing the first win as he defeated Jonathan Tragardh, 6-3, 6-3, in flight four. Also finding a win was Tsyrenov, who swept Sebastian Carlsson, 6-2, 6-3. Both Stamchev and Tsyrenov posted 2-1 records in singles.
The Tigers collected another win with Petropoulos' 7-5, 6-2 effort over Ryan Lissner. Next to win was Puetz, who earned a victory against Neal Skupski, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Keeping Auburn flawless in singles was Krnjetin, as he defeated David Roberts, 7-5, 6-3, but Marsoun provided the finishing touches. The senior took his second three-set match of the weekend, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, over Mark Bowtell. Marsoun was the only Tiger to finish the tournament perfectly, as he finished 3-0 in singles and doubles.
"I was really tired," Marsoun admitted. "Doubles went well, but I struggled in my singles, so I was happy that I got back into it and was able to win. That will help to make me a tough player."
Head coach Eric Shore was excited about the team's performance during the three-day competition. "This weekend went very well," Shore said. "We got better as the week went on and were able to end on a high note to take us into next weekend."
With the Auburn Spring Classic at a close, the Tigers now focus their sights on the National Indoor Qualifier in Boise, Idaho. Auburn will face Vanderbilt in the first round of the tournament, which will take place next Saturday and Sunday.
