AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn men's tennis team concluded the second day of the Auburn Fall Classic Saturday afternoon at the City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarborough Tennis Center. The Tigers took on SEC opponent South Carolina, while Troy and Embry-Riddle competed in the morning session.
Auburn opened the day with a pair of doubles matches against the Gamecocks. Freshmen Michael Wardell and Davis Taylor teamed up to defeated Ivan Cressoni and Chris Sheehan, 8-5.
Junior Nick Maurillo and freshman Andreas Mies battled a tough match with Diego Cubas and Ivan Machado. With the set tied at two games apiece, the Auburn pair pushed ahead to take a three-game lead at 6-3. However, South Carolina fought back and would send the set into a tie break and the Gamecocks took the 9-8 (3) win.
Taylor picked up a win in singles competition for Auburn. The Montgomery, Ala., native topped Sheehan in two sets, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
Also competing in singles was Mies, Maurillo, Wardell and Alex Jorne. Mies dropped a two-set match to Cubas (6-3, 6-2), while Maurillo fell to Machado, 6-2, 6-3. Wardell took on Cressoni, falling 6-4, 6-2.
Jorne faced off with Harry Menzies, taking set one 6-2. Menzies, however, battled and took the final sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Day three of the Auburn Fall Classic is set to start at 9 a.m. on Friday, seeing South take on Embry-Riddle at the City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarborough Tennis Center. Auburn faces Troy at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
