MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 22 Auburn men's tennis team fell in the championship match of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, 4-0, to No. 21 Pepperdine Sunday at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery. With the loss, the Tigers stand at 7-3 on the season
"Pepperdine deserved to win today," head coach Eric Shore said. "If you are going to win a tournament, especially one like the Blue Gray, you have to get fortunate with the timing of your matches. You are able to win one or two matches that are shorter in a period of time that helps a lot. We didn't get fortunate in that regard, so Pepperdine was better than us today."
In doubles, Pepperdine opened up with a win from No. 61 Jenson Turner and Sebastian Fanselow, who defeated freshman Rafael Rondino and sophomore Lucas Lopasso, 8-4. The Waves secured the point when No. 55 Hugh Clarke and Finn Tearney defeated freshman Daniel Cochrane and senior Tim Puetz, 8-6.
Sophomore Andreas Mies and Alex Stamchev were down 7-5 against Alex llompart and Alfredo Moreno before the match was called.
In singles, Mousheg Hovhannisyan won Pepperdine's first point as he took a two-set (6-3, 6-4) win over Rondino. On court 4, Alfredo Moreno topped Cochrane in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Waves clinched the match after No. 50 Alex Llompart defeated Stamchev in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
At the No. 6 spot, No. 106 Mies was up 6-3, 5-1, on Jenson Turner before play was called.
No. 72 Puetz lost the first set to No. 20 Sebastian Fanselow, 6-7, but was ahead 1-0 in the second set before play was suspended. No. 96 Tim Hewitt was down 7-6, 1-0, to No. 47 Finn Tearney at No. 2 singles.
Up next, Auburn opens SEC competition at Georgia on March 4 and close out the weekend at Tennessee on March 6.
