OMAHA, Neb. - Auburn rising senior Kyle Owens earned a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke final Wednesday night on the third evening of finals at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.

Owens, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., clocked a time of 54.31 for the seventh-place spot, coming from the outside lane. He was fourth at the turn but saw the rest of the field gain ground on him over the final 50 meters. Owens was a bit slower than his semifinal time from last night where he swam a lifetime-best 54.18.

"My plan was just to go out for it, try to hold on and give it everything," Owens said. "And I did. Turn, flip and get home. That's all I was thinking - get home. I'm just going to go back to the drawing board and get ready for the U.S. Open in August."

Former Arizona swimmer Matt Grevers won the event with a time of 52.08, the second-fastest time in history, to secure his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Nick Thoman was the second-place finisher in 52.86.

In other action, former Auburn swimmer Micah Lawrence finished seventh in the women's 100 breaststroke final with a time of 1:07.39.

Others earning spots on the U.S. Olympic Team tonight included Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Conor Dwyer (men's 200 free), Missy Franklin and Rachel Bootsma (women's 100 back) and Breeja Larson and Rebecca Soni (women's 100 breast).

Day four of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials gets underway at 10 a.m. here at the CenturyLink Center with 14 Auburn men scheduled to compete in the 100 freestyle and 200 breaststroke.
