COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Hugo Gonzalez blistered his heat, and in turn the school record, in the 200 IM, finishing his race in 1:41.69, which will seed him second in tonight's final at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. Gonzalez's time was one of 14 personal bests set by Auburn swimmers Thursday morning.
It was also a show of speed in the women's 50 free as Aly Tetzloff (21.83) and Ashton Ellzey (22.02) are seeded second and third, respectively, in the finals. Tetzloff's performance made her the second-fastest performer in school history with the 12th-best performance while Ellzey is now the fourth-fastest performer, tied for the 15th-fastest performance.
Swimming in the C Final of the women's 50 free will be Julie Meynen (22.72) and Robyn Clevener (22.77), who are seeded 20th and 24th, respectively.
Auburn will send five to the blocks in the men's 50 free as well. Peter Holoda (19.49) and Zach Apple (19.55) are in the championship final, Santiago Grassi (19.92) is in the consolation final and Luis Martinez (19.96/19.85 swim-off) and Liam McCloskey (20.02) are in the C Final.
Sonnele Oeztuerk and Abi Wilder both set personal bests in the 500 free, with Oeztuerk qualifying 15th for tonight's finals in 4:45.03 while Wilder posted a 4:57.67, dropping almost a full two seconds off her previous best. Zoe Thatcher just missed out on finals, going 4:47.18 to finish 26th.
Josh Dannhauser became the seventh-fastest Auburn swimmer in the 500 free with a time of 4:19.83, which qualified him 15th for tonight's finals. Russell Noletto (4:23.51), Bryan Lee (4:25.33) and Owen Upchurch (4:32.45) all also established career-best times during prelims.
Tommy Brewer will also return in the 200 IM C Final after clocking a 1:46.74 to place 21st.
The competition continues Thursday night with finals of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, men's 1-meter and 200 freestyle relay. Finals begin at 6 p.m.
