Kimeli breaks AU freshman record in 3000m

Clemson, S.C.—Redshirt freshman Joyce Kimeli broke a 25-year old Auburn freshman record and the Tigers' jumpers had a successful outings to pace Auburn's efforts during the second day of the Bob Bollock Invitational at the Clemson Indoor Complex Saturday.
 
Kimeli finished fifth in the women's 3000m in 9:30.14 destroying the previous school rookie record of 9:49.32 set by Kathi Ward in 1994. Kimeli, who qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships this past fall, was competing for the first time ever indoors.
 
Sophomore Caroline Lawrence and senior Skyler Daniel both cleared 1.74m/5-8.5 in the women's high jump for the top marks in the event to finish first and second, respectively. Lawrence, whose mark was a personal-best, won the event with fewer misses than Daniel.
 
In the men's high jump, true freshman Dontavious Hill cleared an indoor personal-best 2.14m/7-0.25 to finish second in the event. Teammate Jaron Brooks was third after successfully jumping 2.09m/6-10.25.
 
Senior Mark Rubalcaba took second place in the men's triple jump for the second-consecutive meet after leaping 14.98m/49-1.75 on his sixth and final attempt to claim silver.
 
In the men's two-day heptathlon, senior Chris Stone put in a solid effort to finish third in the event. Stone led all competitors in the pole vault (4.80m/15-9) and performed well in the high jump to tally 5,318 points over the seven-event competition.
 
It was a solid weekend overall for Auburn, that saw another freshman record tied. Freshman sprinter Anthony Schwartz, making his collegiate debut, won the men's 60m dash in 6.65 tying Marcus Rowland's Auburn freshman record in the event set in 2009.
 
Fellow freshman Shaun Shivers, also seeing his first action this season, claimed bronze in the 60m crossing in 6.83 seconds.
 
Noah Igbinoghene was second in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.44m/24-5. Freshman Cameron Hinton knocked off three seconds off her 400m PR, crossing in 54.86 to finish second for the Tigers on Day 1.
 
Auburn is back in action February 1-2 at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C.
